Higher Ground - TrainingTraining

In addition to utilizing outside organizations for training and instruction, Higher Ground USA holds a number of
in-house trainings each year.  These trainings are intended to keep staff current in areas of technical competence, group management, and leadership development.

In an effort to encourage and support professionalism throughout the outdoor industry, we have opened a number of these trainings to those outside of our organization.  Each training is built upon a combination of industry standards and organizational needs.

Similar trainings can be adapted to the needs of your specific organization.  Higher Ground trainings are the perfect solution for those who require high-quality training, without the need of a national certification.

Backcountry Instructor Training

This backcountry-based course covers a wide-range of topics related to both hard skills and group leadership.  Students learn the essentials in areas of trip preparation; leave-no-trace hiking and camping; wilderness travel; and backcountry safety.  Participants also practice hands-on leadership and examine leadership components like situational leadership; judgment and decision making; and conflict resolution.

Rock Instructor Level 1

This entry level course provides understanding in the fundamentals of rock climbing instruction, in a top-rope setting.   Participants learn the proper use of equipment and knots as well as examine the specifics of belay technique and monitoring.  The course also covers the essentials of group and site management, and reviews basic climbing technique.

Rock Instructor Level 2

The level 2 rock course is intended for those who have completed level 1 training, or who demonstrate competence and adequate climbing experience.  Participants take an in depth look at belay systems, examining belay technique; instruction and supervision; and belay take-over and escape.  The course covers principles of anchor building as well as the fundamentals of top-rope setup.  Finally, an optional rappel set-up and facilitation component may be added on to the course curriculum.

Challenge Course (High & Low)

Challenge Course trainings are highly adaptable and can be configured around a particular facility, or to meet the needs of specific facilitators.  Trainings may be centered around leadership initiatives, low course components, or high course elements.  All challenge course trainings include consideration for group management, safety procedures, set-up and take down, activity facilitation, and group processing.

The Participant Experience
The trip overcame each one of our expectations. We all greatly appreciated the patience and servant’s hearts your staff displayed daily. The experience formed special bonds, friendships, understanding, and an intimate appreciation for God’s creative power.
